Watching the Georgia – South Ossetia war, from a Russian slant.

For many Americans you can now catch live coverage of the Georgia-South Ossetia crisis on the Kremlin’s Engilsh language service Russia Today. The MHZ Networks offers Russia Today as a free channel to residents in the Washington, DC area, and Russia Today is free to air on many satellites over the US. If you don’t have one of those services, you can also catch Russia Today’s Youtube Channel

Now, being a Russian channel, you’ll hear some stuff like:

* “We must stop the slaughter of Russians”

* “Russia will not tolerate deaths of compatriots”

and you won’t hear about Russian warplanes being involved or any resupply of South Ossetians from Russian territory.

But still, given that the US media is focused on the Olympics or the bus crash in Texas today (12 dead) at least you’ll get to hear something about what is going on (and lots and lots of live video).

  1. Yes, that is true “you wont hear about Russian warplanes being involved or any resupply of South Ossetians from Russian territory” the same way you wont hear about how Georgians are being as nasty to Ossets and Abkhazians on American TV

  5. Actually you barely hear anything from American TV at all. They are hardly covering the story. The BBC has it splashed as front page news, but the American TV is filled with Olympics and John Edwards having an affair.

  7. If you come to Georgia, you will discover that the vast majority of stuff written about this country in English is blatant lies. You have to go through a whole relearning process before you can make sense of what is going on here.
South Ossetia is part of Georgia. So says the UN, in a multiplicity of resolutions, and so says every country on earth, Russia included. The separatist regime is a self-appointed gang of thugs who are no more representative of the South Ossetian people than the IRA represents an ordinary Roman Catholic or nationalist in Northern Ireland. Georgia has every right to use military force to retake its own territory from those who illegally occupy it, and has a duty to the local population to do so.
However, Saakashvili and his regime are also a gang of self-appointed thugs. Every election here is blantantly rigged, and the international observers who say otherwise in their reports are happy to admit this in private. He ultimately derives his power from the coup against the legal government engineered by Shevardnadze. The US and UK would not support the legal President because he said things about the reality of Georgian politics and some people who opposed him which sounded very extreme, like they were KGB agents etcetera. History has proved him right in every particular, this latest conflict being one of many examples. Consequently Saakashvili does not have the moral authority to achieve anything in South Ossetia, as he is no different to those who run it, and has no option but to use force as a last gasp attempt to rally the support of Western governments who are slowly seeing him for what he is.
Only Russia can win in this conflict. The trouble is, everyone in the West is so obsessed with the Big Ugly Bear to the north of Georgia, they would rather see it conquer Georgia again to prove their own perception right. I think we all know that, actually, there are and must always be better ways for human beings to conduct themselves.
