Many who saw the Chinese team enter the Olympics asked ‘who is that little boy next to Yao Ming?’ He was nine-year-old Lin Hao, a survivor of the earthquake in Sichuan. 20 of the 30 classmates in his school perished in the disaster, but after freeing himself he went back into the rubble to find his classmates.
Lin Hao, the ‘hall monitor’ in his school encouraged his fellow students to sing songs to help keep up their spirits while rescuers worked to free them.
UNICEF is still taking donations for Chinese earthquake relief.

o my gosh! I absolutely loved Lin Hao! He should be so proud of himself! He has cheeks of a teddy bear and a smile to match! Every time he came on the screen, I squealed in excitement because he was just so darn cute and impressive! Yao Ming seemed to connect with him tremendously as well. Lin Hao probably thinks he is the Green Giant! God Bless Lin Hao and all his family and friends who where affected by the earthquake. He is a true trooper and should always be known as a genuine hero!
Love him and I don’t even know him!

A precious heroic boy, but why was the flag he was carrying upside down?

Have you seen him at the opening ceremony? the boy was carrying a chinese flag that’s UPSIDE DOWN. that’s an international distress call and apparently someone thought to send that message through at the opening ceremony.
i blogged about it and posted a picture. in 20 minutes the photo was removed from the stock repository (PicApp)! someone clearly didn’t want this known.
i still have the image though –

What a sense of duty to his fellow man! As a teacher, I hope to use his story to inspire my students to serve their classmates in everyday activities to make a difference in each others’ lives.

lol he was holding the flag upside down because he’s 9 years old and he’s representing his country in front of 91,000 people…you really think the main thing on his mind was how he was holding a little flag???

p.s. there’s already a distress signal going out; check out http://www.persecution.com to read about the Chinese Christians

I think the little flag slipped down the pole and so being a kid he just picked it up at the other side and started waving it.

I’m completely cynical about China right now but Lin Hao’s presence moved me to tears. Great touch, China.

Lin Hao, a boy wise beyond his years. I too was moved to tears when I heard the story. I hope this story will inspire others to show that kind of selflessness and bravery. A young child who took on the responsibility of hallmonitor to heart in the face of danger…AMAZING!!!!

Lin Hao was amazingly courageous – quite admirable and adorable…. He deserved to be honored! I just couldn’t believe he was 9 years old! At the most, I would have guessed he was 6 years old!

While questioning Lin Hao’s age, remember that this is his Chinese calendar age, not the Gregorian calendar age, probably making him a whole year younger by our calendar. Also, don’t forget he was walking by someone who is 7’6″ – this might make him appear smaller than he actually is!

I am absolutely awed and humbled by Lin Hao. One in 6 billion, what an amazing thing he did, and all the more so because he was so matter of fact about it. So inspiring…

Guys, I love this story and saw it at the Olympic ceremony on tv. It’s very inspiring. I wish someday I can also empower my son to be like this Lin Hao. As far as the upside down is concern, please people, i don’t think it was intentional. It’s small flag and Lin was holding just like any one of us would if we were excited and had to walk a long way. So, please don’t pick on that. Please look at the story and have that inspire you.

Thank you Grace for restoring my sanity on what I’m sure I saw.
Who would be sending (and censoring) a distress call?

and, sorry LT, but the flag itself was put on upside down. Lin Hao was carrying it correctly.

He is lucky to be the headline. There are more impressive stories after the disaster. A young mom use her body cover her baby, the baby had been resued, the young mom lost her life. When rescuers find the young mom body, she was still bending her body to cover and leave space for the baby. Her cell phone last text message,”baby if you can suvive, I want you know that I love you.”

Way to try and steal the thunder from a 9 year old boy who deserves it all. Of course there are other impressive stories. But I as a mother would do the same thing for my baby. But would I as a 9 year old have the courage to do what this boy did? Probably not. He isn’t “Lucky to be on the headline”, he more than deserves to be.

He is one of many… and I am sure he is proud to represent victims… otherwise would have been forgotten.
Hope he will carry mission through as he matures.

Now it’s been 11 years and unfortunately 1. he hasn’t really grown up to be the incredible person he was expected to be – he failed the College Entrance Examination and only went to a vocational school and has been forgotten by many, and 2. one of the survivors he claimed to have rescued told the truth to the media that Lin Hao hadn’t saved him at all, and he was saved by his grandfather instead. So, nothing more to say.
