Cops have to eat

Everyday around lunch, this police boat stops by in front of my building and three cops jump off to go get some Chinese food. Actually, since I’m in HK, I guess it’s just “food”. My apartment is right on the water and a number of water cops, ship captains and pilots live in the buildings next door. All day long small vessels come upto the side and guys jump on and off, kind of like a taxi stand for boats. Would drive the Dept of Homeland Security types in DC totally bonkers.]]>

Fireworks on National Day

So yesterday was Chinese National Day and as part of China, Hong Kong celebrated with a fireworks display down in Wan Cai. We went down to shop a bit before the show, which was quite a bit more insane as there are probably 750,000 mainlanders visiting HK this weekend on mini-vacations. We eventually got a pretty good spot on a bridge and watched the fireworks go off. The first set was a giant collection of four red ones. Than some more red ones. And some more. More red… It was probably 10 minutes before I saw a white one. All in all, it was a pretty good fireworks show, with about 85% of the fireworks red, or say “green turning to red.” Our cab ride home was our most expensive cab ride yet ($10US) as the cabbie didn’t understand a word of English and got turned around by the police who had closed roads (we went in a 10 minute circle). As the only word we knew in Cantonese was where we live, we eventually ended up here (despite our plans to go see a movie). Oh well, guess we’ll catch a matinee today. ]]>

It is now safe to drink the water…I think.

I feel like such a yuppie pansy, but I went out and bought some water filters for our taps. I’m not entirely sure of the status of the water in Hong Kong or in our building, but I figured what the heck, let’s be overly cautious. I’m still drinking bottled water, but washing dishes is now down with these purifiers which actually make the spigot stream water in this nice funky spray. By the way, it should be a law that every person change or check their water aerorater every year. I mean, talk about gross. Fricking rocks in there…rocks of something, hopefully inert. ]]>
