Getting back into it
The Washington Post is highlighting electronic football in the DC area. Not the video games, but the “brrr–rrrr-rrr” type of “stop going in a circle damn it!” electronic football. In one of the greatest comebacks in simulated sports history, electric football — a game that was actually discontinued 17 years ago for lack of any discernible market — has defied the oddsmakers and now dances triumphantly in the end zone of renewed popularity. Leagues all over the country organize weekend tournaments. Players from opposing teams taunt and gibe one another in chat rooms. There’s even an electric football Super Bowl held every year, on the weekend before the real one.]]>
South Africa’s News24 reports that the President of South Africa received “Explicit, sexual e-mails, so bad they could not be described over the telephone.” Yea, it’s called spam. Actually, the government there is treating it as a crime and sending out investigators. “The e-mails contain images allegedly of Mbeki looking for prostitutes and key words are also used. There are also drawings of people having sex, reported a Cape daily.”]]>

I told him that I was no supporter of the Bush administration, but knew that I did not have the full story. I asked if there was anything he wanted to communicate to the world at large. His response, as I recall, went like this: “What you see on the television is not the news It is nothing. The Arab media and the Arab world hates Iraq as well, and they portray us very unfairly. While we know that American news is still somewhat distorted, it is not run by dictators. We just want our voices to be heard. Saddam Hussein was a brutal, evil man who cared nothing for humans. I wish that I could tell all those protestors I see booing Bush to stay at home because he has done such a fantastic thing for my people. I know that I cannot because everyone can be heard in a democracy, but that is my wish.” You may think that you have felt dumb before, but let me tell you something: until you have stood in front of a man who knows real pain and told him that you are against your country’s alleviation of his country’s state-sponsored murderous suffering, you have not felt truly, deeply, like a total fucking moron.” ed note: worth reading the whole piece here]]>
