The BBC is reporting that two Russian airliners went down within minutes of each other. Interfax is reporting that one broadcasted a hijacking alarm just before it went down. Both left from Domedevyo, which is the nicer of the airports in Moscow (and where I’ve flown out of before). Needless to say, Chechnya is considered a possible cause (note the FSB has been assigned to investigate, which some are taking as a sign).

One of the planes was a TU-134 which is NATO codenamed “Crusty”. Here is a picture of one I saw at Domedevyo a year or two ago. It has a glass underside for the pilots to look down, kind of like a B-17. ]]>
The New Scientist has an interview with one of the engineers at Chernobyl, who tried all that he could to stop the reactor from going super-nova before he got a massive dose of radiation. Dozens of others died from their work, including firemen and helicopter pilots who buried the broken reactor in a tomb of concrete.
