We should know where Ike is headed very soon

Ike is about to leave Cuba, and when it hits the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Hurricane hunters should be flying through it again. It should start to pick a general path that can be estimated a bit better and folks along the Texas coast may have a better idea of what [...]

Ike sets up a run toward Galveston, Houston

Again we still have to wait for the Cuban spin, the tilt the hurricane is going to take after it passes over pretty much the entire length of Cuba, but once it does, the NHC has the hurricane making a line for Galveston, Texas and nearby Houston. Interesting week ahead to say the least.

Hurrican Ike now a threat to Texas

Yup, what a difference a day makes. Depending on how long Ike stays over Cuba, we’ll see a different ’spin’ out into the Gulf and final resting point somewhere along the US Gulf Coast. Originally it was Pensacola, then the possibility of New Orleans, but today’s computer models are sending it toward Texas (though without [...]

Hanna update: 1620

Well…guess that’s all over. Really we didn’t have much of a storm. From about 10-12, there were some decent gusts and sheets of rain, but after that it barely reared it’s head again. We had a 90 minute power outage which is incredibly short for around here (we go 24 hours with just a decent [...]

Hurricane Ike track could hit New Orleans?

Yup. Ok, it’s still early, and Ike is a mess. It’s going all different directions so don’t run out the door just yet (unless you are in South Florida). But the current curvature of Ike puts it on a direct collision course with New Orleans. However, the computer models (which you really should examine more [...]

Hanna Update: 1045am

Just had our first power spike. Came back quickly but I suspect some grids are down nearby. Winds and Rain are now steady, but occasionally ’sheeting’ and gusting quite a bit stronger. Waves have not crashed over the seawall just yet, but heavy rain amounts means most of the area down there is underwater (including [...]

Hurricane Ike track is confused, to say the least

Hurricane Ike is the one we’ll probably be talking about for a few days. It’s a pretty major storm that will be off the coast of Miami on Monday, probably. It’s track is going in many different directions, but right now it is a category 4 (though it will weaken a bit tonight). Where it [...]

Hanna might dodge the East Coast

I’ve let the lawn grow out this week. It was one of the lessons I had from Isabel–the longer the grass and other foliage, the more water that will be trapped / kept out of the soil when these big storms come (and thus, the less change of landslides). I’ve also got the generator set [...]

Off to buy a generator

These wind speed projections show it’s going to basically suck in a few days over the house. We’ve had four power outages this year > 6 hours and I’m fed up (one was 36 hours). I suspect this weekend is going to mega-suck which means it is time for a generator. Now I just have [...]

Hurricane Hanna, Hurricane Ike, TD10 and another all at play

It’s going to be a crazy week for Hurricane hunters. While Gustav is turning into rain clouds, Hanna is spinning around and will be quickly followed by Hurricane Ike and then what is currently known as Tropical Depression 10. We could see some machine gun hurricanes striking the US over the next few weeks. It's [...]

New Orleans looters go directly to jail

Mayor Nagin has decided that anyone caught looting will be sent to the Louisiana State Penitentary in Angola, one of the most notorious prisons in the country. “You will not get a pass this time. Anyone caught looting in New Orleans will go directly to the Big House in the general population. You will go [...]
