I really don’t think that the color of your skin matters in a situation like this! This is absolutely ridiculous! Thoughts and comments like that is what is wrong with the USA and why there will never be unity among the races. It is not just the whites that are making it difficult! It is all of the races as well! This has got to stop!

This is to all those racist and uneducated remarks. The color of a person’s skin is not the issue so drop the attitude. You are what you make of yourself and it does not matter what you or your ancestor’s past is. We all have a past with issues and scars. We are who we are and we cannot ever blame someone else for what we do with our lives. So AJ and KP get a grip.

I also know that for the comment of his mom turning him on his dad is bull as well. I have seen in my life that a person grows up and makes his/her own decisions. If this dad is a good guy his children would make a way to know this and be in his life. I believe that very few people have control over another person’s feelings and decisions when it comes to knowing the truth about your own parent (that is, if the parent is alive and wants to be in that child’s life).

I am also a divorced dad, and I know that there are two sides to every story. I’m only “luke-warm” towards Mrs. Phelps. She did a good job as a single mom. But it also appears (to me…) that she might NOT be the easiest person on earth to be married to.

It could be that after their divorce, she drove a wedge between the kids and their father. I’ve been very lucky in that regard. Our divorce was civil. We both have the best interest of our kids in mind.

I hope that the Phelps children will reconcile with their father before it is too late. From the brief comments that Mr. Phelps has made to the press, he seems extremely proud of his son, and willing to remain in the background so Michael can have his moment or glory.

Michael Phelps Dad knows what is going on. He is just keeping it to himself. He respect his son and wants to give him privacy. It’s also very painful from him not being in Beijing. He is a descent man and an educated man. Did their mom really raised them 3 without any support from their Dad? I do not think so. The truth will come out someday. A proud Father will always praise his own Son in many different ways. Just give them more time.

Sorry TAL , I must agree with AJ if MIcheal had been of latin , african american decent the press and tabloids would have been all over it where’s mike’s dad / father! why
isn’t he here to provide support for his son just as his mother is ?
an now enjoy the celebrating
this is a great honor to make it to the Olympics even if these atheletes don’t even
make it to the finals or
qualify they all trained very hard to get where they are today . there is a young man from our little town that just qualified last nite and we’re all very proud of him .

Unfortunately this world we live in is the way it is , it’s so sad .

AJ, please get over yourself. There are plenty of African-American athletes who are gracefully representing the USA and we don’t hear anything about their fathers. Moreover, it would appear that Fred Phelps is not trying to “steal” the spotlight. He has not granted ANY interviews. So, please think before you ignorantly write a comment.
